DNA of the Red Cross
DNA of the Red Cross is a workshop to introduce people to the ‘building blocks of the Red Cross’ – humanitarian law, our Fundamental Principles, and the values that underpin the wider Movement.
The workshop answers common questions about our work here and overseas, as well as our unique position as a neutral, impartial, and independent global Movement. It includes examples of our work both here and overseas and how we put our Fundamental Principles into action.
It’s around 90 minutes long and takes place on Microsoft Teams.
We encourage all new employees to participate, the sessions are also open to members and volunteers. Anyone is welcome to join, even if you’ve been before.
Because the workshop is a foundational session, it’s helpful to know who’s taken part in each session. Please register for the workshop so we can note this

About Murdoch Stephens
Murdoch is an author, researcher, and advocate. He joined New Zealand Red Cross in 2020 as a Migration researcher and is our Principal Advisor – International Humanitarian Law and Policy.
He completed his PhD in 2018, which focused on how contemporary philosophers have responded to the urgency of climate change. He’s also a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies at the University of Auckland and was a 2023 Fulbright Scholar.
In 2013 he launched the Doing Our Bit advocacy campaign to double New Zealand’s refugee quota from 750 and 1500 people each year. The campaign involved civil society groups and led to non-partisan policy commitments of an increased quota from every political party in New Zealand Parliament.
