Area awards
New Zealand Red Cross Service Award
Service Awards recognise contributions given by Red Cross people over a period of time.
Service is calculated from the date the service began. Service may be at a local, area or national level.
To be eligible, members must have participated in humanitarian action — as an employee, volunteer, or both — during every year that the award recognises.

New Zealand Red Cross Certificate of Commendation
Awarded to people who’ve made a special noteworthy contribution to our work at a local or area level (see 'National awards' for national-level noteworthy contributions).
Only New Zealand Red Cross service may be considered for this award. Nominees must have made a significant contribution to the work of New Zealand Red Cross through a particular programme or activity, or have consistently demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and commitment to the work of New Zealand Red Cross.
To be eligible for this award, nominees must have been active members of New Zealand Red Cross for more than five years and have made a significant contribution to the work of New Zealand Red Cross.

- Area Council may confer at a local or Area level
- National Board may confer awards at a local, area or national level
New Zealand Red Cross Certificate of Appreciation
Awarded to people who’ve made a special noteworthy contribution to our work at a local or area level, but who don't qualify for a higher award (see 'National awards' for national-level noteworthy contributions).
This award recognises both Red Cross people, as well as other individuals and organisations who have made a noteworthy contribution to New Zealand Red Cross through their efforts, support or donation.
To be eligible, nominees must be individuals, groups or organisations who have made a noteworthy contribution to New Zealand Red Cross through their efforts, support or donation.
- Any Red Cross person can nominate someone for this award
- Area Council may confer at a local or Area level
- National Board may confer awards at a local, area or national level
National awards
New Zealand Red Cross Counsellor of Honour
This is our highest honour awarded. It recognises achievement and merit of the highest degree of service by a member or employee.
The National Council will only appoint a member as a Counsellor of Honour on the recommendation of the National Board, which must be unanimous in their recommendation.
The maximum number of counsellors of honour at any time is 20. Only New Zealand Red Cross service may be considered for this award.
Dedication to the Fundamental Principles, selfless humanitarian service to others, exceptional leadership and dedication to the work of New Zealand Red Cross are characteristic of those eligible for this award.
It is expected these awardees will continue to bring leadership, experience, knowledge and wisdom to New Zealand Red Cross, while continuing to be an active member.
To be eligible, nominees must be active Red Cross members who have served for a minimum of 10 years.
- Any Red Cross person can nominate someone for this award
- Area Council may nominate to the National Board through the Honours and Awards Committee
- National Board action on the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee.
New Zealand Red Cross Medal of Honour
Recognises an outstanding, society-changing achievement and service by a member.
Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding or exceptional service to New Zealand Red Cross at a local, area or national level. Only New Zealand Red Cross service may be considered for this award.
Dedication to the Fundamental Principles, selfless humanitarian service to others, exceptional leadership and dedication to the work of New Zealand Red Cross are characteristic of those eligible for this award.
To be eligible for this award, nominees must be members of New Zealand Red Cross.

- Area Council may nominate to the National Board through the Honours and Awards Committee
- National Board action on the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee.
New Zealand Red Cross Distinguished Service Award
Recognises distinguished service by a member for exceptional service as a driving force to strengthen New Zealand Red Cross. Only New Zealand Red Cross service is considered for this award.
Only New Zealand Red Cross service is considered for this award. Nominees must have demonstrated:

Exceptional service at a local, area or national level, where leadership and innovation have furthered the mission of New Zealand Red Cross or in an activity or project that has provided direct benefits for the work of New Zealand Red Cross

Distinguished service in diverse roles worthy of individual recognition

Leadership and commitment to the Fundamental Principles.
Nominees may include people who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the mission of the New Zealand Red Cross, people who have given exceptional service, such as lifting the results of a fundraising campaign, introducing and guiding improvements to a community service programme, or providing specialist advice and guidance to the organisation.
- Any Red Cross person can nominate someone for this award
- Area Council may nominate to the National Board through the Honours and Awards Committee
- National Board action on the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee.
Only international service for periods of 12 months or more is relevant in consideration for this award. Assignment evaluations should show clear evidence of the nominee’s contribution to the work of Red Cross in the international field.
This award is open to all New Zealand Red Cross delegates who, on behalf of New Zealand Red Cross, have worked on projects organised by New Zealand Red Cross, the ICRC, the IFRC or another Red Cross or Red Crescent National Society. This may include persons who have given service on one or more overseas field placements either in conflict relief, natural disaster relief or within a development project.

New Zealand Red Cross Meritorious Service Award
Recognises significant, sustained contribution by a New Zealand Red Cross person. Only New Zealand Red Cross service is considered for this award. Nominees must demonstrate significant, sustained contribution at a local, area or national level, and demonstrated commitment to delivery of an activity or project. Consistent commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement should also be demonstrated.

Nominees may include Red Cross people who have served in an exceptional manner at a local, area or national level, or have made a significant contribution to the work of New Zealand Red Cross through a particular programme or activity. They may also include those who have consistently demonstrated initiative, resourcefulness and commitment to the work of New Zealand Red Cross.
Only current New Zealand Red Cross members who have given more than 10 years’ of service, or made a significant contribution to the work of New Zealand Red Cross, are eligible for this award.

The National Society must have demonstrated achievement through a successful, ongoing programme, project or activity directly related to the work of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. The programme, project or activity must be providing clearly demonstrated benefits to the community.
Pacific Island National Societies may be nominated for this award.
The National Board of New Zealand Red Cross, on the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee.
Jennifer Clark Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship to the value of $2000 to attend a course. The scholarship recognises past National Board member Jennifer Clark, as a passionate advocate for the development of youth, by way of an annual scholarship. Established in December 2010 with the permission of Jennifer’s family.
To be eligible, awardees must be between 18 and 30 years of age at the time of scholarship distribution.
- Any young Red Cross person can submit an application for this scholarship
- Area Council may nominate to the National Board through the Honours and Awards Committee
- National Board actions on the recommendation of the Honours and Awards Committee
International awards
The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies also confer honours and awards to Red Cross people. The most notable awards are the Florence Nightingale Medal and the Henry Dunant medal.

The Florence Nightingale Medal
The Florence Nightingale Medal is the highest international Red Cross honour that can be awarded to a nurse. It honors nurses or nursing aids who've worked as international delegates and shown exceptional courage and a devotion to victims of armed conflict or disaster.
It's also awarded to nurses who demonstrate outstanding service and a pioneering spirit in the areas of public health and nursing education.

Henry Dunant medal
The Henry Dunant Medal is the highest distinction that the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement can bestow on an individual member to reward outstanding services and acts of great devotion, mainly of international significance, to the cause of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
