Role description
Youth Settlement volunteers provide help to Settlement Youth Workers for events that support refugee background young people in their settlement journey. These events provide vital opportunities for refugee background young people to build connections with others in their communities. Events may include workshops, sharing kai and sports days. Youth Settlement volunteers empower rangatahi, provide safe environments and help create spaces where young people can thrive.
As a Youth Settlement volunteer, you may also be supporting the young people to navigate everyday challenges and adapt to life in Aotearoa New Zealand. Volunteers commit to support at least two events a term for two terms or more.
Your tasks
- Supporting our Settlement Youth Workers to run activities and events
- Provide supervision for children and young people,
- Help create a welcoming and inclusive space for refugee-background young people through community-based activities,
- Support the positive development of young people that contribute to themselves, their whānau, community and world.
Location
In one of eight settlement locations across the motu. Locations are Invercargill, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Levin, Masterton and Blenheim.
Volunteer requirements and training
- Passion to develop and support young people in their journey,
- Openness to working with people from refugee backgrounds,
- Some understanding or experience of youth work (desirable, but not required),
- Driver’s licence (desirable, but not required).
Health, safety & wellbeing (HSW)
While working as a volunteer you’ll need to follow this HSW information to keep yourself and others safe.
- Make sure your actions (or lack of actions) don’t harm your health, safety and wellbeing, or harm anyone else.
- Take part in a HSW induction, training, programmes and activities.
- Follow all instructions given to you about health, safety and wellbeing.
- Follow all our HSW policies, standards and procedures about health, safety and wellbeing.
- Make sure you have the right training for any activities you are doing.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) for any work activities that may need it to stay safe.
- If you spot a hazard, or you are involved in an incident or near miss, report this straight away.
