New Zealand Red Cross launches Vanuatu Earthquakes Appeal
18 December 2024
New Zealand Red Cross has today (18 December 2024) launched an appeal to support those affected by the recent Vanuatu earthquakes.
Donations raised will support the efforts of Vanuatu Red Cross to provide emergency relief such as temporary shelter and the effective distribution of supplies.
New Zealand Red Cross Secretary General Sarah Stuart-Black says the damage to people’s lives and livelihoods from the 7.3 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, is immense.
Lives have been lost, and hundreds of people are injured or may be trying to find loved ones as well as finding their homes and community’s infrastructure damaged.
“Urgent help is needed.”
“The destruction caused by this event is massive, and the road to recovery will be long. The people of Vanuatu will need support for the response and recovery.”
As well as the immediate response, funds raised will also go to recovery efforts. This may include New Zealand Red Cross sending experts to help teams on the ground deliver vital humanitarian assistance and contribute to restoring services and infrastructure.
“We know how generous and compassionate New Zealanders are and we hope this Appeal will provide people a way to send tangible support to the tens of thousands of people in Vanuatu tragically affected by this disaster.”
Our thoughts are with the people of Vanuatu who have been so badly affected by three cyclones already this year and who now face the significant impact of this earthquake.
