NZQA Standards:
It meets the new guidelines from WorkSafe New Zealand (Feb 2020) and is highly recommended for most workplaces. Throughout the course, scenarios will be incorporated into the modules to practice the skills and knowledge developed on the course.
There are no prerequisite requirements for this course. You must revalidate this course every 2 years.
What this course covers
- Primary assessment.
- Stable side positioning
- Scene management of emergency situations.
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) – adult, child and infant.
- Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Foreign body airway obstruction (choking) – adult, child, infant.
- Control of life threatening bleeding.
- Bleeding, shock and wound care.
- Fractures, sprains, strains and dislocations.
- Medical conditions- heart attack, angina, asthma, diabetes, seizures, stroke and severe allergies.
- Poisoning.
- Burns – thermal, chemical and electrical.
- Head and spinal injuries.
- Complex medical and trauma injuries.
- Environmental conditions.
Learning options
You may choose one of two ways to complete your course:
Classroom - Complete all training in the classroom over 12 hours (1 and a half days)
Online – Complete pre-course learning online (4 hours), and attend a shorter face to face course in the classroom (8 hours/1 day)

You must hold a current Comprehensive First Aid (6402, 6401, 6400), Essential First Aid Certificate (6402, 6401), First Aid Revalidation or an equivalent certificate from another provider to attend this course. You must bring proof of your existing first aid certificate upon attending a refresher course.
As of 1 February 2023, you can attend a revalidation course if your certificate is no older than two years and three months from the date of issue.

Learning outcomes
Participants will:
- Understand what Psychological First Aid is and isn't.
- Become familiar with distress reactions
- Provide PFA using ‘The Five Elements’ and the action principles:
- Look: Know some of the warning signs.
- Listen: How to check in, listen and respond.
- Link: Connect the person and/or yourself to the right support.
- Practice providing Psychological First Aid.

This course builds confidence and skills required to provide a safe first aid response, and the management of children and infants, the scene and other bystanders, until the arrival of other assistance. Please note this is not recommended for childcare businesses such as kindergartens or schools.

- Breathing difficulties – recognising breathing difficulties and asthma.
- Poisoning.
- Anaphylaxis – including action plan.
- Febrile seizures/infantile convulsions.
